  ### Beta

Open to every eligible BILL organization. The tool surface is still expanding; names, parameters, and responses can change between releases.
</Callout>

## What is the BILL MCP server?

It connects BILL to Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI assistants, so you can ask questions about your account in plain language instead of clicking through the BILL user interface.

## What you can do

Grouped by what you are trying to accomplish, not by tool. BILL will continue to expand these capabilities.

* **Review what you owe**: search and analyze your bills by vendor, due date, amount, approval status, payment status; review your bills’ line items, approvers, credits; check your recurring templates and what’s coming due next.

* **Track payments you have sent**: search outgoing payments by vendor, date, amount, or status; see how a payment was disbursed, where it is in delivery, and whether it can still be voided; locate payments by its confirmation number to quickly resolve vendor questions.

* **Chase what you are owed**: search and analyze invoices by customer, status, invoice date, due date, or outstanding amount; quickly find invoices by their invoice number.

* **Analyze card spend**: search Spend & Expense transactions by date, amount, merchant, card, budget, or cardholder.

Everything here is read-only for now. Creating, editing, approving, and paying are not yet available. You can only see what your BILL role lets you see; for example, analyzing your organization’s card spend would require the appropriate Admin access within Spend & Expense.

Currently, we only support authenticating as a single organization at a time.

## Before you start

You need an active BILL account in a US-based organization. No admin role is required. You get the access your BILL role already gives you. Not currently supported: BILL partner organizations, international organizations, and acting on multiple managed organizations within a single Accountant Console session.

Since BILL is not yet listed in any official connector directories, you’ll need to add it manually using one of the following URLs:

| Environment | Server URL |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| **Production** | `https://gateway.prod.bill.com/ai-mcp-server/v1` |
| **Sandbox** | `https://gateway.stage.bill.com/ai-mcp-server/v1` |

Once BILL is published on an AI assistants’ directory, connecting will be a one-click install and these manual steps will go away.

## Connect BILL to your AI assistant

Select your AI assistant below and follow the setup steps.

### Connect BILL to Claude

1. Select **Settings** > **Connectors** > **Add custom connector**.
2. Enter a name (for example, *BILL MCP connector*) and the server URL.
3. Verify **Authentication** is set to **Sign in now** and **OAuth client** is set to **Use Claude's published identity**.
4. Select **Add**.
5. Select **Connect**. Claude redirects you to BILL.
6. Sign in to BILL.
7. Choose the organization this connection should read from, agree to the terms of sharing your BILL data with Claude, and then approve the access request.

**Note**: These general steps may change over time or differ depending on your Claude plan. See <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11175166-get-started-with-custom-connectors-using-remote-mcp">Claude’s documentation</Anchor> for more information.

### Connect BILL to ChatGPT

**Note**: Use the ChatGPT web app to connect to BILL.

1. Select **Plugins** > **Add** dropdown > **Create MCP App**.
2. Enter a name (for example, *BILL MCP connector*).
3. Enter a description. This step is optional.
4. Enter the server URL in the **Connection** field.
5. Verify that **Authentication** is set to **OAuth**. If it is not, select **OAuth**.
6. Agree to the terms of enabling a custom MCP, and then select **Create**. ChatGPT redirects you to BILL.
7. Sign in to BILL.
8. Choose the organization this connection should read from, agree to the terms of sharing your BILL data with ChatGPT, and then approve the access request.

**Note**: These general steps may change over time or differ depending on your ChatGPT plan.

## Confirm it worked

Ask something only your BILL account can answer:

`"What bills are due in the next two weeks?"`, or<br />`"How much do we owe Acme Supply?"`

BILL tools may require approval by your AI assistant. Approve the first call, get a real answer, and you are connected.

## Permissions and access

* Every call runs as you, against the BILL role you already have. A bill you cannot see in BILL is a bill the AI assistant cannot see.
* For now, you pick one organization at sign-in and it is fixed for that connection. To access another, you will need to disconnect and reconnect to the other organization.
* Users can review and disconnect connections from within the AI assistants as well as within the BILL app. In the BILL app, select your profile icon in the top right, select **Connected apps**, and you’ll be able to see all AI assistant connections. You can disconnect from here.

## Other MCP clients

Claude and ChatGPT work out of the box, and are the AI assistants we have validated end to end. We’re working to add support for several other popular AI assistants.

Other MCP clients need approval before they can connect. Email <developerprogram@hq.bill.com> with the URL where your client publishes its identity, what you're building, and who will use it.

## Troubleshooting

* **Sign-in fails, or no BILL tools appear**. Remove the connector and add it again, checking the URL and the authentication setting. Tools stay hidden until sign-in succeeds.
* **Unauthorized after a period of inactivity**. Disconnect and reconnect to re-run the sign-in.
* **Payables work but card transactions fail**. Confirm your organization has Spend & Expense and your user is entitled to it.
* **Wrong organization**. Fixed at sign-in. Disconnect, reconnect, and pick the right one.
* **The assistant ignores the connector**. In Claude, confirm the connector is toggled on. In ChatGPT, enable BILL from the composer for that chat.
* **Your own client fails at authorization**. Confirm your client’s identity document is reachable over HTTPS and lists the exact redirect URI you send.
