# Sandbox API sign up

Use the BILL AP & AR API to integrate your application with the BILL AP and AR automation capabilities. When you begin testing with the BILL AP & AR API, you are in the API sandbox environment.

Your first step is to sign-up and set up your credentials to begin testing with the BILL AP & AR API. When your sign-up is complete, you can generate a developer key, and then continue with signing in with the API. ## Sign-up to create your BILL developer account

When you sign-up to create your BILL developer account, you set up four credentials required for signing in with the BILL AP & AR API.

| Credential      | Description                                                                                                                                  |
| :-------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Username        | Your username is the email address used to sign in to your BILL developer account.                                                           |
| Password        | Your password is used to sign in to your BILL developer account.                                                                             |
| Organization ID | Your BILL developer account represents your organization in BILL. The organization ID is a unique alphanumeric value that begins with `008`. |
| Developer key   | Your developer key is used to identify your developer account in your API requests.                                                          |

Your sign-up process begins with creating a new username and password.

1. Navigate to the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://www-test.bill.com/signup?env=stage">BILL sandbox sign-up form</Anchor>.
2. Enter the required information and click **Get Started**.

        **Note**: This is the **username** for your BILL developer account.

        For a non-US developer, this can be a random US phone number that is generated online. This number has no impact on the 2-step verification step later.

        Set this field as `1`. There is no impact in the sign-up flow if this number does not match your employee count.

3. Select all the options under **How can BILL help you with your business?**, and click **Next**.
4. Create a password for your developer account, and click **Next**. This is the **password** for your BILL developer account.
5. Complete 2-step verification/Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Enter a valid phone number, select a method for receiving a security code, and click **Send code**. BILL sends your security code to the provided phone number. You can also use a non-US phone number in this step.
6. Enter the security code value. BILL validates this value and directs you to enter an address for your organization.

7. Select **No** for the **Did you receive an email invite to get paid through  BILL?** question, and click **Next**.
8. You are directed to continue your setup with a series of steps. BILL sends you an email to confirm your email address.

Click the menu icon at the top left to get the complete view of the BILL web app for your test organization.

## Generate developer key

You can generate a developer key in the BILL web app to work with the BILL AP & AR API.<br />

  ### You must be an administrator to generate developer keys

  By default, the user that signs up and creates a BILL account has the `ADMINISTRATOR` user role.

  The signed-in user must have an `ADMINISTRATOR` user role to generate developer keys. As an administrator of your test organization, you can generate up to 4 developer keys.

  ### Production developer key generation

  To generate a developer key in the production environment, navigate to the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://login.us.bill.com/neo/login">BILL production web app</Anchor> and complete the same steps below.

1. Sign in to the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://login.stage.us.bill.com/neo/login">BILL sandbox web app</Anchor>. Use your developer account email address and password.
2. Click **Settings** in your BILL account.
3. Click **Sync & Integrations > Manage Developer Keys**.
4. Click **Generate developer key**. You are prompted to agree to the BILL developer terms of service.
5. Review and accept the terms of service, and then click **Generate key**. It takes up to a minute for BILL to generate a developer key. Click **Reload page** in a few moments to view your generated key.

Keep your key in a safe place, such as a password manager.

  ### Your organization ID is available

  The **organization ID** for your BILL developer account is available at the bottom of this page. This **organization ID** is required for you to sign in with the BILL API.

## Upgrade your sandbox account subscription

When you sign up to create your sandbox developer account, you are on a trial subscription plan. Upgrade your subscription plan to make sure you have access to all the BILL features in sandbox.

1. Sign in to the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://login.stage.us.bill.com/neo/login">BILL sandbox web app</Anchor>. Use your developer account email address and password.
2. Click **Settings** in your BILL account.
3. Click **Billing & subscription > Pricing & plans**.
4. Select the highest tier plan available, and then confirm your plan change.

  ### There is no subscription fees in sandbox

  In the sandbox environment, BILL does not charge you for any pricing plan or subscription.

When the trial period for your sandbox account is over, use the same test payment method to continue using your sandbox account.
